Consecutive interpreting is commonly used in a one to one scenario or small groups. The interpreter speaks after the source-language speaker has finished speaking. When the speaker pauses or finishes speaking, the interpreter then renders the message in the target language.
Simultaneous interpretation is commonly used for large conferences or events and can often be a complex and difficult process. The interpreter translates the message in the target language, while the source-language speaker continuously speaks.
The interpreter usually sits in a sound-proof booth and speaks into a microphone, while clearly seeing and hearing the source-language speaker via a set of earphones.
